A Review of Alien
Even 30 years after the film was originally produced is still a chilling masterpiece, no easy task for a classic sci-fi movie with technology constantly improving and audiences looking for more and more sophistication in effects work. Sure, the alien looks pretty bad here and there but Alien is a fantastic story and that’s what makes it such a good movie even today.
I don’t think we can overlook the influence this film has had directly on it’s sequels but also on so many other horror films that have come since, the Zerg in Starcraft, Pitch Black, Event Horizon and The Thing and many other movies come to mind as films that pay homage to Alien and I feel that this film is what started it all.
This is as much true about the visual style as it is the story model. The dark cinematography, which I think Ridley perfects in his later film Blade Runner, the grungy battered space ship and environments and it’s superb lighting throughout are all fantastic attributes of film history. It would be unfair to say that Alien invented all of these things, but Alien was the first film to get them all right.
This is certainly no classic film to skip.
