The closed nature of Apple’s devices is absolutely no threat to the beautiful and fundamental tinkering aspects of technology culture. If a 13-year-old wants to tinker, he or she has more options than ever to do so. Computer parts have never been so cheap and accessible, and device form factors and uses have never been so diverse. 13-year-olds in the 1970s didn’t have access to BitTorrent for downloading 30 different versions of Linux. They didn’t have rich-media forums or Twitter for near-instant feedback on development questions from an audience that literally spans all continents and even all languages.
On the eve of the iPad, there has never been a better time to tinker.
