The retail cycle for games is growing shorter and shorter. If publishers stick with their old philosophy of putting titles out of their minds once that window closes, they’re doing themselves (and their shareholders) a disservice. And they’ll forever play second fiddle to other entertainment industries in the battle to control pop culture.

GameSetWatch - Analysis: The Vast Wonderland Of Once-Great Games
I’ve been playing a number of old games recently so I have the backstory and context for newer titles like Splinter Cell: Conviction. While the graphically quality can be tough to overcome in some cases there is still a gold mine of the masterpieces of gaming history to explore, often at much cheaper prices. If publishers and retailers could find a better way to keep older games in some kind of distribution it would be great for everyone.
Mobile platforms, especially the iPad and similar large screen devices on the horizon are also spectacular for playing certain types of old games. The Settlers 3 on an iPad is one great example with mechanics and graphical quality perfectly suited for the iPad. It’s also a great bit of nostalgic fun for those who played the early versions of the series.
